The three vultures released earlier this year through the hacking method started their migration. The young birds kept together at the start, but soon one of them- Barnabie lost the group and was saved by our team near the Svirkovo village, near Simeonovgrad in Bulgaria. The bird was admitted at the Green Balkans Rescue Center with a broken wing.
Ultron and Ostrava-2 continued together towards Eastern Rhodopes where they visited the Madzharovo feeding site. Unfortunately, the two birds separated and while Ultron took towards Greece and reached the only Black vulture colony in the Blakans in Dadia, Ostrava-2 passed the Dardanelles, visited Lesbos island and reached Turkey, and is currently north of Izmir.
What is surprising for our team is the fact that, according to the data from the birds’ transmitters, they have not fed for over two weeks, or might have eaten something here and there, but it cannot have been enough.
Meanwhile, Riga and Boyan, the two cinereous vultures, released through the hack last year, are doing well, Riga is feeling good in Greece, in the area of Messolonghi, where the bird was spotted with another adult Black vulture, and Boyan is in Turkey, where it has obviously chosen to winter near Cankiri, north of Ankara.
The rest of the cinereous vultures are keeping to their areas of release, near Sliven and Kotel. Our team has observed some signs of breeding behavior between the male Balkan and the female VCF Know-how, which is courted by another male also – Zlosten. We wish both suitors best of luck!
The project team also built two artificial nests in the Kotel area for the upcoming breeding season we are looking forward to.
