Green Balkans’ team installed 7 artificial nests to attract pairs of Black Vultures in the area of Byala reka

First Picture
In Bulgaria, during the last 50 years forest use changes and development have resulted in the widespread loss of mature nesting trees that have been former nesting sites for Black Vulture. At the same time, the approach of creating new nesting habitats for Black Vultures has gained extremely positive results in France and Spain (Mallorca) for Black Vulture.

The project team especially selected remote areas close to abandoned settlements, mainly on the South of the village of Siv kladenets. The nests were constructed from natural materials and placed mostly onto old, over 50-year-old Black Pines with abnormal crowns. One of the nests was set onto an Oak Tree.

The action will continue when the weather gets better, while we are hoping to attract the Black Vultures nesting in Dadia, North Greece, to expand their breeding area towards Southern Bulgaria.
