Another Griffon vulture found dead in the region of Sliven. K93 was a well known bird to the local people and although their efforts to protect it, the bird was tragically electrocuted by dangerous power pole.
The Griffon vulture K93 was imported in Bulgaria in 2014 from Valencia, Spain. The mission of the bird is to support the increase of the species in our country.
In 2014 it was accommodated in the vultures’ adaptation aviary in Nature park “Sinite kamanni”, Sliven and after he spent three years of adaptation he was released. Two weeks later the bird was admitted for rehabilitation in the Green Balkans’ Wildlife rehabilitation and breeding center in Stara Zagora, as the bird found weak and exhausted. The bird was rehabilitated and a tagged with satellite transmitter before it was released.
The bird became habitual guest of the city and several times has been observed by the local people. Thus, the vulture encountered hunters from the hunting groups from the villages Blatets and Glushnik, who have fed the bird with pieces of meat from the hunted game. On Christmas eve in 2017 the vulture was captured by gypsies from Glushnik village, who requested ransom, but after our team denied to pay for the bird and explained that the capturing of the bird is illegal, they submitted it. It was released again in Nature park “Sinite kamani”, as it has been observed by our team to have returned inside the adaptation aviary a few times.
Unfortunately, after the vulture was released for once again, it was found dead in the suburbs of Sliven. After an inspection of our team on site it was confirmed that the bird has died by electrocution on a dangerous power pole.
