The situation in the Lesser Kestrel hacking facility in Sakar is getting more and more interesting!

Moreover, the two adult Lesser Kestrel pairs use regularly the nesting boxes installed within “Lesser Kestrel Recovery” LIFE11 NAT/BG/360 project implemented by Green Balkans to provide suitable breeding conditions for the birds. Each of the pairs has occupied a nesting box and the birds spend more time there, preparing their nests, bringing food, and demonstrating mating rituals and courtship behavior.

Green Balkans’ team hopes that if these birds breed successfully in the hacking facility, this will provide more chicks to be released into the wild in the summer, along with the juvenile Lesser Kestrels secured by DEMA’s Lesser Kestrel breeding center in Spain.

The adult birds are kept in the hacking facility in order to attract the youngsters as well as to foster a sense of belonging to a colony. Being colonial birds, the Lesser Kestrels seek the safety of a colony.

The presence of adults will encourage the Lesser Kestrels that were released from the hacking facility last summer and are now returning from their first migration to breed. As we shared with you before, the three young birds that have already returned stay near the cage trying to contact the adult birds. These are three females, which are now patiently awaiting more Lesser Kestrels to return to this region.
